Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish insists he will not be tempted to risk Andy Carroll against Newcastle if the striker is not fully fit.

Carroll missed Liverpool's 5-0 victory over Birmingham last weekend after jarring his knee against Arsenal and is facing a race to be fit to face his former side on Sunday.

But while the ex-Magpies striker will be desperate to line up against his boyhood club, former Toon boss Dalglish insists the romance of the occasion will play no part in his decision.

"I don't think nature knows it's Newcastle," Dalglish said of Carroll's fitness. "For Andy it's a poignant game but if he's not fit, he's not fit."

Dalglish admits Carroll would be disappointed to miss out on Sunday's match, but he insists the striker's long-term fitness is his top priority.

"We will take an educated opinion on whether Andy is fit or not," Dalglish said. "If he is not fit then it will be a disappointment for Andy, but he is here for five years and I am sure he will play Newcastle more than just this Sunday coming up. His future comes long before a game against Newcastle."
